Backyard Gets Structure With a Retaining Wall and Concrete Patio

A lot of backyards start out rough. Uneven ground, no real layout, nothing to give the space a purpose. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - a yard that had potential but needed solid groundwork before anything else could happen.

We came in and tackled this from the ground up. The grading work alone made a big difference. Once the earth was moved and leveled, the whole yard opened up. That's usually where we start - get the grade right, and everything else falls into place.

The precast concrete block retaining wall is the centerpiece of this build. Clean lines, stacked tight, built to hold. This isn't decorative - it's doing real work to manage the grade change and create usable, level space on both sides. We also incorporated a natural boulder border along one section of the yard, which adds character while still serving a functional purpose. Two different looks, one unified yard.

The concrete patio ties it all together. A solid, flat surface gives the homeowner a defined area to actually use - somewhere to put furniture, gather, or just enjoy the space. Paired with the gravel surround and existing plantings, the yard now has structure it didn't have before.

Good landscaping really does start with the groundwork. The wall, the patio, the grading - none of it is glamorous work, but it's the stuff that makes a yard actually function. When you get that right, the rest of the yard has something to build on.
